Clear Vision for All Lifestyles

Contact lenses provide visual clarity that many wearers find preferable for day-to-day life. An alternative to glasses, contacts are available in a variety of types that can correct most refractive errors.

Certain types of contact lenses can even treat certain corneal irregularities, providing long-lasting results. In younger patients, certain contact lenses can slow the progression of myopia.

Is Your Child Considering Contact Lenses?

Contact lenses are not right for everyone, so it’s important to determine if contacts are right for your child before giving them their first pair. Our contact lens exams are thorough and informative, giving us the chance to assess their overall eye health and identify any refractive errors.

A contact lens prescription is slightly different than an eyeglass prescription, so we will first determine what that is for your child. After the comprehensive eye exam, if contacts are indeed a good fit, we’ll show your child how to insert and remove their lenses and how to keep them clean.

We’ll send you and your child off with a pair of trial lenses so they can get a feel for them outside of our clinic. If they have any problems, we will happily make any necessary adjustments or suggest a different option.

Are Contacts Right For My Child?

Age plays a significant role in when a child may be ready for contact lenses.A study by The American Optometric Association showed that 76.7% of optometrists and ophthalmologists felt most comfortable introducing contact lenses to children ages 10 and up. In the same study, 9.6% of optometrists were more willing to prescribe contact lenses to children if they lived an active lifestyle or were involved in sports. Although they may not suit every lifestyle, contacts can provide more flexibility and freedom for people that live active lives.

Which Contact Lenses Are Right For My Child?

The most frequently prescribed type of contact lenses for children are daily disposable contact lenses. Your child can simply dispose of their lenses after wearing them for one day, and put in a new pair the following day. Daily disposable lenses negate the risk of bacteria growing and building up on the lens between wears due to improper storage.

Weekly or monthly disposable lenses are a good choice for older children that are capable of following proper hygiene practices and disinfecting their lenses between wears. These lenses are worn during the day and stored in a saline solution at night.

Some children that have corneal irregularities like keratoconus may be fitted with rigid gas permeable lenses to provide clearer vision and, in some cases, treat the condition.

If your child has astigmatism, they may benefit from using aspheric or toric contact lenses that can provide them with clearer, sharper vision than traditional styles.

We’re happy to provide all the necessary insight you and your child need to make an informed decision about contact lenses. For more information, please book an appointment.
